Sharing Costs

Tanker owners are increasingly unhappy at the rising costs of transiting the Indian Ocean owing to pirate activity.

They are pressing for a change from the Worldscale Association to incorporate escalating piracy costs into the freight rate structure.

Additional costs included extra distances sailed to avoid pirates, insurance costs, paying for piracy defence equipment —which could include armed guards — and extra crew pay.
