AIS Anger
The availability and access to AIS data around the Gulf of Aden (GoA) has prompted an angry response.
One extremely popular site marinetraffic.com has reportedly been broadcasting data from a vessel which has started relaying information on ships and movements in the GoA.
It is understood that the “MV Kellie Chouest”, a ship leased by Military Sealift Command for rescue and salvage ops is the ship which was sharing the view of a sensitive area. The information could very easily fall into the hands of pirates and criminals, and this has prompted a frenzy amongst maritime observers and bloggers.
The site GCaptain has led the charge with a survey on AIS usage, and questions being asked as to the security implications.
