Strike Calls
There are rumblings of a seafarer strike across India, Bangladesh and Malaysia, of sailors refusing to travel the Gulf of Aden corridor.
The strike plans are, according to Abdul Gani Serang, secretary of the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), still “in the initial stages, and will be implemented only if required to wake up governments that refuse to act”.
However the threat remains and it is believed that if concerted international efforts are not witnessed when the pirate season re-starts after the monsoon, then there could well be seafarer groups refusing to transit the High Risk Area.
