Protection Concerns

A union representing Hong Kong seamen has called for greater protection for its members on the high seas.

It made the call after a record number of people were taken hostage by pirates last year – in particular in waters off Somalia.

Captain Tam Shing-chieh from the Merchant Navy Officers’ Guild said he was concerned for the safety of local seafarers who have to sail in pirate-infested areas.
