Armed Quarter
The Norwegian Shipowners Association has confirmed that since the formalisation on the use of armed guards on Norwegian-owned merchant vessels was formalised on July 1st, the growing threat of piracy has seen 25% of Norwegian-owned ships put armed guards on board in the last two months.
Under the rules, shipowners must seek permission from the police and maritime authorities over the use of security companies.
