Court Appeal
The first piracy conviction in a US courtroom in nearly 200 years is going before an appeals court as five Somali men who attacked a Navy warship off the coast of Africa seek to reverse a jury’s verdict.
Attorneys for the five will argue before a three-judge panel of the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals that the men’s actions fell short of the legal standard for piracy.
Belgium adopted a far reaching Anti Piracy Act in December 2009.
This legislation has recently be used and convicted in appeal the pirate Abdihassan Ahmed to 10 years jail sentence.
Abdihassan Ahmed was involved in the hijacking of the Belgian ship “Pompei” in 2009.
