Filipino seafarers are the top beneficiaries of Japan’s anti-piracy efforts as its defence force has been escorting sea vessels in the pirate-prone Gulf of Aden since 2009.
The Japanese Embassy said the Japan Self-Defence Force has so far escorted 1,943 vessels in the last two years, from July 28, 2009 to July 31, 2011.
“After two years from the commencement of the operation … Filipino seafarers are by far the biggest beneficiaries of this escort operations in terms of the nationality of the crew,” it said.
