Rough Guide
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has warned that the seas of the Maldives will be rough with heavy showers and strong winds predicted, and has warned seafarers to be aware of the bad weather.
The position of the islands, mid-Indian Ocean and this weather report indicates why there has been a reduction in deep ocean pirate activity in recent weeks, which has prompted more coastal activity.
NATO has also been stressing the rough weather. They state that the conditions in the Somali Basin (SB) and especially the Arabian Sea (AS) remain poor and it is reflected by the lack of recent piracy incidents.
The Southern Somali Coast has seen an increase in shore based activity. Incidents recorded from last year suggest that pirate activity will escalate in this area before the end of September, as the monsoon abates.
