Italian Response
Italy is to deploy a special naval force with merchant vessels to protect them from Somali pirates in an escalation of international efforts to prevent attacks costing billions of dollars each year.
The strategy, announced by defence minister Ignazio La Russa, came after the dramatic hijack and subsequent rescue of the “Montecristo”. The force will be divided into 10 groups of six and will be based in Djibouti.
