Working Hard
The Somali pirates are still taking ships, but they have to work a lot harder at it.
Two years ago, half the pirate attacks resulted in a ship taken. This year, only 12 percent of the attacks succeed. To compensate, there are more attacks, nearly three times more than last year.
Ships are better protected, with many of the most valuable ones carrying armed guards. Pirates have responded by finding new targets and using new tactics.
