Mali arms ship seized in Guinea
Guinea’s minister of defence told a private radio station that the government of Guinea has blocked a ship containing arms that he said were destined for neighbouring Mali, whose northern half has fallen into the hands of Qaeda-linked extremists.
Abdoul Kabele Camara, the minister in charge of national defence, said on Nostalgie FM on Tuesday that he had informed the West Africa regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, of the discovery. And the bloc instructed Guinea to stop the shipment.
Camara declined to provide details, including where the ship had come from. He also did not say when the arms were seized.
The landlocked nation of Mali was thrown into disarray in March following a coup.
