China plans survey of Senkaku Islands
A Chinese official says his country plans to survey the Senkaku Islands, which are controlled by Japan but claimed by China.
Li Pengde, the deputy head of the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, made the remark on Tuesday in an interview with China National Radio.
Li said the accuracy of their current maps of the islands is below required standards because China has never surveyed the islands from the ground.
He said it is necessary to survey the islands, as there are limits to aerial map-making.
Li said the authorities plan to send surveyors as soon as possible under the condition that their safety is guaranteed.
Earlier this week, China announced its intention to strengthen the functions of the National Oceanic Administration, which is deploying surveillance ships and aircraft to areas around the Senkaku Islands.
NHK’s reporter says China will likely try to put greater pressure on Japan.
