Lithuanian Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment Remain At The Top Of Their Game
The Lithuanian Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD), deployed with the EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia Operation Atalanta since August 2013, is tasked with the protection of the World Food Programme (WFP) ship MV Caroline Scan.
Embarked on the Caroline scan around the clock, the AVPD ensures the security of the WFP shipments, delivering much needed aid to the ports of Mogadishu, Bossasso and Berbera from where it reaches the Somali people.
To perform their task to the highest standard, regular training is conducted while deployed at sea. This training includes shooting, weapon handling, use of force, battle drills, communications, medical training and physical exercise.
The Lithuanian team have recently conducted weapons training using a floating target to maintain their shooting skills.
The Officer in Charge of the Lithuanian AVPD commented “We follow an extensive package of training throughout our deployment to ensure the team remain ready to defend the MV Caroline Scan.”
The Lithuanian AVPD will remain aboard the WFP ship until December when they will hand over to a Serbian team.
