CMF ship ROKS Choi Young has contributed to a collection of over 2,600 US dollars for people of the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan after a charity fundraising event.
More than two hundred members of the ROK Naval Escort Task Group, which included members of CTF 151 ship ROKS Choi Young’s crew, held the e-sport fundraising event after hearing about the damage caused by the devastating typhoon.
The fundraiser involved a Wii – Archery competition with all entry fees donated to charity. “My Philippine friends, shoot for hope!” was the slogan coined by participants for the event, which the Commanding Officer of the ROK Naval Escort Task Group and ROKS Choi Young deemed a great success.
Captain Choi, Sung Mok said: “My crew had a strong desire to contribute to the international disaster aid effort and their will was reflected by the successful fundraising event.”
The ROKS Choi Young has also been busy participating in a combined counter piracy exercise with NATO’s HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen in the Gulf of Aden. The CMF-NATO exercise was the second in a series designed to enhance collaborative understanding of operational procedures for units working together in the region.
During the exercise the boarding teams of ROKS Choi Young and the NATO counter-piracy mission successfully seized a simulated pirated vessel and rescued the hostages. A medical exercise followed where an ‘injured’ patient was medically evacuated to the ROKS Choi Young where medical teams administered first aid.
Following the exercise Captain Choi, Sung Mok said: “The combined exercise was helpful in enhancing counter-piracy operability and beneficial in establishing a combined medical support system. I look forward to having continued collaboration with our NATO colleagues.”
Henning Amundsen, Commander of the NATO counter-piracy task force, said: “We have established a good relationship with the Koreans. Cooperation and coordination between forces in the region is essential in fighting piracy most effectively.”
