Russian escort ship arrives in Gulf of Aden as part of international anti-piracy effort

A Russian Baltic fleet escort ship, the Yaroslav Mudryi, arrived in the Gulf of Aden on Friday as part of an international effort to protect commercial ships from pirates operating in the region.

Every year, about 20,000 merchant ships pass through the seas off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, which form an important sea line of communication between Asia and Europe.
