U.S. Navy to Keep Eye on Strait of Hormuz

ARLINGTON, Va. — The U.S. Navy will continue to monitor vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian forces seized and subsequently released a container ship last week.
Iranian patrol boats captured the Maersk Tigris cargo ship while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz on April 28. It was released on May 7, without incident, and the 24-person crew was in good condition, according to Rickmers Shipmanagement, the vessel’s operator. There were no Americans aboard the container ship.
Maersk Line said the capture was unacceptable, but likely an isolated incident. “The release follows a constructive dialogue with the Iranian authorities, including the Ports & Maritime Organization, and the provision of a letter of undertaking in relation to the underlying cargo case. We will continue our dialogue with the aim to fully resolve the cargo case,” Maersk Line said in a statement.
