Italy springs ‘Rohatgi advice’ on India

Italy has pit India against advice allegedly from its own top law officer, stumping Indian diplomats at an international tribunal in Hamburg that is hearing Rome’s appeal against the trial of two Italian marines in India.

After India accused Italy of violating a sovereign commitment it made to the Supreme Court here, Rome on Tuesday told the International Tribunal for the Law of the Seas (ITLOS) it acted under the supervision of Mukul Rohatgi, now India’s attorney-general.
