German shipowners warn against complacency.

The German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) has warned of a slowdown in the fight against piracy in the Horn of Africa. “The presence of the naval forces in the Gulf of Aden and its air monitoring – combined with the protection of the shipowner – takes the criminals in Somalia successfully the oxygen,” says Ralf Nagel, managing board member of the VDR in Hamburg.

Overall, however, the situation was like a smoldering fire, he warned. Should the protection subside, “the flames will flare up quickly”.
